Paying for something worthwhile

A few months ago I started reading the Swampland blog at Time.com. Mostly I did so out of curiosity because one of the writers is married to someone I knew years ago. I wanted to see who one of the smartest guys I ever met had married. I arrived out of curiosity, but stayed for the writing.  I still read Swampland, but when Ana Marie Cox went part time it lowered the appeal a tad. Now that her gig at Radar has gone belly up, I guess no one saw that coming (cue cheesy drum affect), Ms Cox is with spot on the McCain plane but without employer. Enter the net. Within a day or so she raised $2500. She thanks folks “First of all: Thank you. Thankyouthankyouthankyou. I am humbled and amazed by the generosity of those out there in the tubes.”

My question are people being generous or paying for something they want? And I don’t mean a call or an email from Cox. I want to read her take on McCain.
